Front Load Washers & Dryers
High-efficiency front-load washers typically offer the best performance and highest energy- and water-efficiency. Soiled clothes enter and leave the horizontally-mounted drum via a hinged door on the front of the machine. As the tub turns, it cleans clothes by gently picking them up and dropping them in a very small solution of water and detergent.
Top Load Washers & Dryers
High-efficiency top-load washers look like traditional top-load models, but use any of a number of different technologies to clean more gently and effectively than the traditional agitator-based approach. Because there's no agitator, there's more space in the drum (translating to a higher capacity and fewer loads to wash). Like front-load washers, high-efficiency top-loaders use a special type of detergent that gets clothes clean in less water than traditional top-load washers.
